Permits are required and they are to protect you, your family, and your pets from contractors that don’t know what they are doing. The building inspector will make sure that your water heater is installed correctly so that you and your family are safe.

I am often asked “how is my water heater not up to code?” This is an excellent question. A question I would love to answer for you free of charge. Another reason to get a permit is that if you don’t and there is a need for a home owners insurance claim (water or fire damage would be examples), the insurance adjuster will likely ask for the “signed off” permit. If you don’t have one, they will likely deny the insurance claim on the premise that your water heater was not up-to-code and caused the damage.
In addition to making sure your water heater is safe and up-to-code, the building inspector will make sure that you have the appropriate smoke and co2 detectors installed in your home. This again is for your protection. Below is a form we created to help you determine if your home is in compliance.
