Earthquakes are an unavoidable reality in California, and even relatively small tremors can cause significant damage. Recently, in June of 2024, a magnitude 4.5 earthquake struck Mendocino County, 132 miles northwest of Sacramento, reminding us how important it is to prepare our homes for seismic activity. Quakes closer to home have also been felt, with smaller tremors near Clearlake and the California-Nevada border, highlighting Sacramento’s vulnerability to regional seismic forces.
The Impact of Earthquakes on Your Home
Earthquakes can affect homes in many ways, from cracked walls to damaged foundations. One often-overlooked risk is the impact on water heaters. If not properly secured, a water heater can tip over, leading to water damage, gas leaks, or even fires. Additionally, losing access to hot water during an emergency can complicate recovery efforts for your family.
Why Securing Your Water Heater Matters
California building codes mandate seismic strapping for water heaters for a reason. Properly installed straps prevent tipping during an earthquake, protecting not only the appliance but also your home and family. These straps are cost-effective and essential for ensuring your water heater stays in place during a quake.
Examples of Improperly Secured Water Heaters
The below picture is a water heater we encountered. Notice how there is a gap between the wall and the heater and how it’s hanging several inches over the stand? It looks funny and it certainly isn’t safe! It all becomes clear when you look at the top arrow. The water heater was too tall for the previous water connections. Instead of replumbing those pipes to adjust for the taller water heater, they improvised. This water heater is in no way secure and does not follow California building codes.
This was a creatively illegal solution to water heater straps being too short. Trust us, this isn’t something you want to cheap out on!
Lastly, here is a before and after of a recent installation we completed. You can see the haphazard earthquake straps of the previous and the neat and up to code earthquake straps of our install.
Additional Tips for Earthquake Safety
- Turn Off the Gas if You Smell a Leak: If you smell gas after an earthquake, immediately shut off the gas supply to your house at the main valve to reduce the risk of a fire or explosion.
- Inspect Your Home Regularly: Look for signs of foundation stress or wall cracks that may worsen in a quake.
- Secure Heavy Furniture and Appliances: Beyond water heaters, secure bookshelves, TVs, and other heavy items that could tip over.
- Have an Emergency Kit Ready: Include essentials like water, non-perishable food, flashlights, batteries, camping stove, and blankets are all fantastic things to have on hand.
